The Disappearance of Edogawa Conan TV Special in December, Mai Kuraki Providing Theme

Thanks to the new issue of Shounen Sunday, the two-hour anime special The Disappearance of Edogawa Conan ~The Worst Two Days in History~ finally has a rough airdate. This “special collaboration” project will air this December on NTV & YTV’s special Friday Road Show block.

Originally teased one year ago in December 2013, the plot of the special is a Conan-infused version of the 2012 Japanese comedy film Kagi Dorobo no Method (The Key Thief’s Method). Kenji Uchida, the director on the original film, collaborated with Gosho Aoyama to craft the crossover work that essentially works Conan and various characters in the series into the plot of the film, which originally involved a fall in a bathhouse that gave one of the primary characters amnesia—a role now assumed by Conan himself.

The special is to be directed by former Conan movie director Yasuichiro Yamamoto, who has worked on various projects for the franchise in his career. In addition to stints helming the TV series, he was also the director responsible for movies Magician of the Silver Sky in 2004 through the fourteenth movie The Lost Ship in the Sky in 2010. From there, he took on a supervising role for the fifteenth and sixteenth movies.

Additionally, Mai Kuraki will provide a special theme song for the occasion, entitled “Dynamite”. The song will first be found on her upcoming greatest hits album Mai Kuraki BEST 151A -LOVE & HOPE-due out on November 12. The release also includes a great deal of songs familiar to Conan fans, including “Secret of my heart”, “Time after time”, “TRY AGAIN”, “Revive”, and “always”.

Magic Kaito 1412 Trailer, Details, and Themes Revealed

The premiere of Kaitou Kid’s all new anime series Magic Kaito 1412 is right around the corner, with the first episode hitting the airwaves on October 4th. The series will run concurrently with Conan for a total of 24 episodes.

Thus far, very little information has been released indicating what the series will cover. Whether we will see adaptations, re-adaptations of the old Kid manga cases, or anime originals is thus far unconfirmed although an adaptation of 2011’s two-part manga flashback story introducing the “Phantom Lady” seems primed for inclusion. It was also previously revealed that certain events from Kid’s appearances in Conan will be shown from his perspective as well this time around.

It was recently announced that the opening theme for the series is to be “Kimi no Matsu Sekai” by debut girl group LAGOON. Another new group, REVALCY, will be providing the ending theme, titled “WHITE of CRIME”. Both songs will be released as singles on November 26th. Unlike with Conan in which most artists until recently have been signed to Being GIZA, both of the aforementioned acts are represented by Sony Music Japan.

Lastly, broadcaster YTV’s official English portal now includes the following synopsis for potential international distribution partners:

Kaito Kuroba is a seventeen-year-old high school student who is an adept magician due to the influence of his father, Toichi Kuroba who died mysteriously. Eight years after his father’s death, Kaito discovers a secret room in his home that was set up by his father to reveal itself on that very day. Finding Kid the Phantom Thief’s gadgets and costume in the room, Kaito dons the disguise and decides to confront Kid who has recently resurfaced after his eight years of absence. Kaito discovers Kid to be Konosuke Jii, his father’s butler, who ascertains Toichi was the first Kid the Phantom Thief. Jii reveals he took on the role as Kid to lure out Toichi’s murderer. Upon learning that his father was murdered, Kaito continues the role of Kid the Phantom Thief as he searches for his father’s killer.

New Magic Kaito Chapters in October, Conan Manga Goes on Hiatus

mkFollowing the announcement of a Magic Kaito anime series adaptation a few weeks ago, Shonen Sunday’s latest issue is reporting that a new Magic Kaito story spanning 3 chapters will be published in October from the 44th to the 46th issue of the magazine. This will be the first Magic Kaito story to be published in 3 years. The latest volume was released in 2007.

Consequently, Detective Conan will be going on hiatus for several weeks. After File 908’s publication next week, no new file will be released until the end of October.

Magic Kaito 1412 Voice Cast Revealed

magickaito1412voiceactorsannouncementThe upcoming anime series featuring Kaito Kid in the limelight recently had its final title revealed: Magic Kaito 1412. As previously reported, the series will premiere on October 4th at 5:30 PM on NTV/YTV just before and on the same channel as Detective Conan.

Little is known about the actual plot of the series thus far. What has been revealed is that not only will the usual Kid mainstays appear, including childhood friend Aoko, her father Inspector Nakamori, the witch Akako, and rival Hakuba, at least one other cameo has been confirmed: Conan himself will also be making appearances. One intriguing direction for future episodes was previously revealed when it was mentioned that Magic Kaito 1412 would be showcasing events featured in the Detective Conan anime and manga but from Kid’s perspective instead.

While many familiar faces to Magic Kaito fans will be returning in this series, most of the voice actors have been changed—presumably due to the change in production studios and the increased workload due to going from occasional appearances in Conan to an infrequent guest series and now to a full-time solo series. Kappei Yamaguchi, who has voiced both Shinichi and Kid in the Detective Conan anime, movies, and OVAs from the beginning, will be reprising the lead role. However, most of the other roles have been re-cast.

Aoko will now be voiced by newcomer Mao Ichimichi. Aoko’s role had first been filled by Minami Takayama—Conan’s own voice actress—during earlier appearances including in Conan‘s fourth OVA and in episode 219. Akako, who once was voiced by Haibara’s voice actress Megumi Hayashibara in the character’s showing in the Conan series, will be voiced in this new rendition by Eri Kitamura. Hakuba will also be returning, but the role has now been given to Mamoru Miyano. The character had originally been covered by Akira Ishida in his only movie appearance (The Private Eyes’ Requiem), as well as both episodes in which he appeared in Conan (episodes 219 and 479) and the bout of episodes he made appearances for the previous Magic Kaito series.
